Chartley Hall is the third hall to be built on the site, the previous two having burnt down. The original building was a moated and battlemented timber mansion built to replace Chartley castle as a residence. The moat still exists.
Elizabeth 1st was entertained here in 1575 and Mary, Queen of Scots, was imprisoned here in 1586.
